The trip in short
Three days in Chicago, its skyscrapers best seen from a boat on the river, then around Lake Michigan. Holland is the Dutch town on the lake, with tulips in May and a real windmill; at Traverse City the Sleeping Bear Dunes rise high above the water. From Mackinaw City the ferry goes to Mackinac Island, where there are no cars, only bikes and horses. Frankenmuth is Michigan's little Bavaria, and Detroit ends the trip with Motown and the Henry Ford museum. Lakes and cities of the Midwest. Chicago is where Route 66 begins; further north are the north woods.
