Three days in Washington among the monuments, the Capitol and the Smithsonian, then west into the mountains. From Luray, Skyline Drive follows the ridge of Shenandoah National Park, with a view over the valley at every overlook. Charlottesville has Jefferson's Monticello and the vineyards around it; Williamsburg is a colonial town where the 18th century goes on, with Jamestown next door.
